Townsend is known to be the quieter side of the Smokies and is the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the United States. Townsend has a multitude of outdoor activities, such as fishing on the Little River, hiking, horseback riding, and tubing just to name a few. Townsend offers plenty of accommodations from cabins, hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts; shopping from arts and crafts to boutiques; yearly festivals and great local restaurants.
Cades Cove is the most visited destination in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
An 11-mile, one-way loop road circles the cove, offering a chance to see the beautiful scenery, nature and wildlife. Allow at least two to four hours to drive the loop at Cades Cove and longer if you walk some of the trails and buildings. Traffic is very heavy during the summer and fall seasons and on weekends year-round. While driving the loop road, please be courteous to others and use the pullovers when stopping to view the scenery or wildlife.
The road is open from sunrise to sunset year-round. On Wednesdays and Saturdays from May to September the road is closed to motor vehicles until 10:00 a.m. This allows for bicyclists and pedestrians to have a safe, quiet experience. It is against the law to drive off the roads in the Park. No off roading allowed.
There are three churches, a working grist mill, barns, log houses, and many other restored structures in the cove. There is also a visitor center with restrooms located half-way around the loop.
